NAME OF ARTISTS/ENSEMBLE: MELODY OF CHINA, INC.

Main Idea of the Program:
Through the program of "Legend of Chinese Music", the students will be able to increase their awareness of Chinese music through learning about the history of Chines music and instruments. The students will participate in the "Chinese Percussion Band", for approximately 15 minutes. MOC will offer "Teacher's Guide" and exercises with pictures of Chinese musical instruments, plus quiz and review sheets.

ACTIVITIES (in order of performance) PURPOSE/CONCERT DURATION
1. "Joyful Atmosphere" a folk music from northwest China Opening performing music. Following an introduction to general history of Chinese instruments and music 5 minutes
2. General Introduction: about Chinese instruments classified by winds, plucked strings, bowled strings and percussion. Thousand years ago, Chinese peopel has been using the materials of metal, stone, gourd, clay, leather, silk, wood and bamboo to make the instruments. First about Chinese wind. Students get to learn about the xun (Chinese ocarina), di-zi (bamboo flute), xiao (vertically-played flute) and sheng (mouth organ). The history of those instruments are from 1,500-7,000 years. The instruments could be played in different methods. 3 minutes
3. "Titanic" theme song The history of a 7,000 years old instrument -- Xun plays a new piece from the movie. Students will learn the materials of making instruments. 2 minutes
4. "Horse Carte Driver" a 60's di-zi music from North China. Bamboo is a kind of very important materials to Chinese people, it could be used for making different things, like instruments, furniture, house etc, It also be a favour food to panda. The player will shows the students how many finger holes on bamboo flute and how to make sound by blowing, why Chinese flute use membrine to a loud sound? 2 minutes
5. "Autumn Thought on Dressing Table", a classical music from China Students will get to know about the wind instruments could be played by side, vertically or sounded by reeds. 2 minutes
6. "Dance Music of the Yao Tribe" a arranged folk music from southwest China. Sheng is an only harmany instrument in Chinese orchestra, that means a instrument could make sound not only one note, just like a keyboard, there are several notes sounding togather. 2 minutes
7. General introduction to strings: about Chinese plucked and bowled strings, like er-hu (two strings fiddles), yangqin (hammered dulcimer), ruan (moon guitar) Students will learn about string family from China. Some instruments make sound by peak(s), some make sound by a bowl with horse tail. Some sound box made of wood, coconut, bamboo and snake skin. 2 minutes
8. "Horse Racing" a famous er-hu music of 1960's. The students will get to know about northern China's customs, people are living there. The music depicts about grassland people's life and a festival involved horse racing competition in inner Mongolian. 2 minutes
9. "Camel's Bells on the Silk Road" Ruan player will show the students a picture of northwest China. There is a camel team walking on the Silk Road. 2 minutes
10. "Joyful Xinjiang People" a festival music from the Xinjiang area Xinjiang is a biggest province in China. Most people are minorities, dancing, singing and playing music are part of important life to them. 2 minutes
11. General introduction to Chinese percussion instruments Students will learn about metal, wood, leather bamboo percussion instruments from China. 2 minutes
12. "Tumbling Walnuts" a folk drum music from central China Drummers will show the students a special dancing like drum music from central China. 2 minutes
13. Students "Chinese Percussion Band" There are about 20 students will participate in the band for playing "Flower Drum Song" from Anhui, a province on Eastern China. Students will learn how to hold a instruments, how to play them with musicians. 15 minutes
14. Answer questions There are 4-5 students will ask questions about the music and instruments 2 minutes
